How would you define SDLC?

SDLC, or Software Development Life Cycle, is a systematic process for building software that ensures the quality and correctness of the software built. It’s a framework defining tasks performed at each step in the software development process.

SDLC is a structure followed by a development team within the software organization. It consists of a detailed plan describing how to develop, maintain, replace, and alter or enhance specific software. The life cycle defines a methodology for improving the quality of software and the overall development process.

Here are the typical phases of the SDLC:

1. Requirements Gathering/Analysis: The most crucial stage in the SDLC is obtaining the requirements from the client. A clear, detailed set of requirements helps ensure that the software will meet the client’s needs.
2. Design: In this phase, the software’s architecture is designed. System Design helps in specifying hardware and system requirements and also helps in defining the overall system architecture.
3. Implementation/ Coding: The software design is translated into source code, where the software is actually created.
4. Testing: After the code is developed, it’s tested against the requirements to ensure the product is actually solving the needs addressed and gathered during the requirements phase.
5. Deployment: Upon successful testing, the software is delivered/deployed to the customer for their use.
6. Maintenance: Once the customer starts using the developed software, then the actual problems come up, which need to be solved from time to time. This process, where the care is taken for the developed product, is known as maintenance.

These stages generally follow a waterfall or sequential model, but other models like iterative, spiral, and agile methodologies also exist, which adjust these stages to best fit their approach to software development.
