Demystifying the Black Box: The Business Analysts Role in AI

We are now living in a time where Artificial Intelligence is actually doing things. It is predicting when customers will stop doing business with us. It is deciding who gets a bank loan and who does not. It is even looking at job resumes to see who is a fit. Machine learning models are making decisions that affect businesses.

But there is a problem: people do not trust these decisions. When someone asks, “Why did the Artificial Intelligence system say no to this persons loan?” and the people who made the system say, “We do not know the system just made that decision ” then the business has a problem.

This is where Explainable AI comes in. Explainable AI is a way to make sure that people can understand how the Artificial Intelligence system made its decision. The Business Analyst is very important in this process.

What is the “Black Box” Problem?

When we make software we usually use rules to make decisions. If something happens then something else will happen. This is easy to understand and write down.. Artificial Intelligence systems, especially the complicated ones are like a “Black Box.” We put information in. The system makes a decision but we do not know how it made that decision. Even the people who made the system do not know.

Explainable AI is a way to make sense of these decisions. It helps people understand why the Artificial Intelligence system made a decision. Of just saying, “This customer will stop doing business with us ” it says, “This customer will stop doing business with us because they have not been using our services as much lately and they have been having some problems.”

Why Business Analysts are Important for Artificial Intelligence

You might think that Artificial Intelligence is for people who know how to code and work with data.. That is not true. Business Analysts are very important for making sure that Artificial Intelligence systems are fair and work well.

Here are some reasons why Business Analysts are important:

1. Changing the Way We Think About Requirements

When we are making an Artificial Intelligence system we need to think about what the system needs to do and what it needs to explain. Who is going to be using this system? What do they need to know to trust it? Are there any rules or laws that we need to follow?

2. Helping Data Scientists and Business Leaders Talk to Each

Data scientists talk about things like “model accuracy” and “training data.” Business leaders talk about things like “risk” and “customer satisfaction.” The Business Analyst helps these two groups understand each other. They make sure that the data scientists are making systems that solve business problems and that the business leaders understand what the systems can and cannot do.

3. Making Sure the System is Fair

If an Artificial Intelligence system is trained on data that’s biased then the system will be biased too. The Business Analyst looks at the data. Asks questions like “Are we leaving out any groups of people?” or “Is this data too old to be useful?”

4. Testing the System

Testing an Artificial Intelligence system is not like testing a computer program. The Business Analyst needs to design tests that see how the system works in situations. They need to make sure that the systems explanations make sense to people.

How to Get Ready for AI

If you want to be prepared for the future you should start learning about Artificial Intelligence now. You do not need to learn how to code. You should understand some basic things like:

* How to ask the right questions to get useful information from an Artificial Intelligence system

* How to work with types of data

* How to make sure that Artificial Intelligence systems are fair and follow the rules

The main point is that Artificial Intelligence is not going to replace Business Analysts.. Business Analysts who know how to work with Artificial Intelligence will be more important, than those who do not.
